NOLA Vox

NOLA Vox

NOLA Vox was born out of a passion project between Sue Englebert and Zach Materne. Both lifelong singers, Sue and Zach recognized a need for an all-voice a cappella ensemble in New Orleans—one that welcomed all singers and celebrated the city’s vibrant musical culture. When the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS), historically an all-male organization, opened its membership to everyone, they saw an opportunity to create something new and inclusive. At the time, there was no BHS presence in New Orleans.

After a series of coffee meetings in early 2023, Sue and Zach put out a call for singers in the New Orleans community—and were overwhelmed when more than 70 people signed up in just two weeks. Not only did they find singers, they also found their director, Cassie Schmitt, who holds a B.A. in Choral Conducting from the University of Southern California and a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from LSU, with a strong background in contemporary a cappella.

NOLA Vox held its first rehearsal in August 2023 and hasn’t looked back. In May 2024, the group officially chartered as the New Orleans chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society.

During its second season (2024–25), NOLA Vox significantly expanded its presence and impact. The ensemble produced its own holiday and spring shows—including a landmark spring concert at the historic St. Louis Cathedral—and made numerous appearances across the city. Highlights included a featured performance at the Jefferson Parish Bicentennial Ball, showcasing the group’s versatility and growing reputation. In just a short time, NOLA Vox has made a tremendous impact on the local arts community, bringing joyful, high-quality a cappella to new audiences and venues throughout the region.

Now entering its third season (2025–26), NOLA Vox continues its mission of enriching lives through vocal harmony in New Orleans. The ensemble welcomes singers of all ages and backgrounds. Our repertoire spans all genres, with a focus on New Orleans artists and musical styles.

Do you love to sing—and want to have fun doing it? NOLA Vox is for you!
