My grandfather—pictured here in his darkroom—laid the foundation for the work I do today. He filmed and preserved many of our family’s memories, sometimes shaping them into short films. He also recorded the personal stories of family members and conducted extensive genealogical research.
After his passing, I completed one of his unfinished films, Think of Me First as a Person. In 2006, it became one of 25 films selected by the Library of Congress for inclusion in the National Film Registry. Library of Congress film curator Mike Mashon described it as “a beautifully edited, poetic expression . . . a transcendent home movie.”
His work instilled in me the belief that everyone has a story worth telling. This fall, Legacy Films and Preservation will offer workshops for people interested in recording personal histories and creating short films and audio documentaries.
